  37. An interesting range of events this week with the annual Hoogovens 
  38. event (full games are available from TASC throughout the week) and
  39. from a speed event in Tallinn Estonia. This week has been a catching
  40. up process with a final bunch of games from Groningen and the Hastings
  41. Challengers. One event I haven't caught up with is the last round
  42. of last years US Championships, does anyone have the games?
  43.  
  44. Apologies about my www page which for some reason appears to be
  45. unavailable (as are all Bradford pages) over the weekend. There
  46. is no direct reason for this so I hope that the problem can 
  47. be resolved. It usually becomes available directly upon the
  48. arrival of the computer staff on Monday mornings.

  54. 2) PCA lose INTEL as a sponsor.

  57. It has been reported that INTEL will not renew their sponsorship
  58. with the PCA. Whether this marks the end of their chess sponsorship
  59. or simply the end of their association with the PCA is unclear.
  60.  
  61. INTEL have been reported to be happy with the amount of exposure
  62. they have had, I hope this is the case. It is sad that they
  63. entered at a time when the chess World has been in chaos due to
  64. the intransgence and incompetence of those at the top of the game.
  65. Would that they had been around to sponsor the GMA ....
  66. It had been said to me that INTEL Europe were marginally in 
  67. favour of renewal and that INTEL USA were marginally against.
  68. A decisive factor may have been Gary Kasparov's decision to
  69. play a match against INTEL's DEEP BLUE in February. This and
  70. the changes at the top of FIDE which have made it very unlikely
  71. that there will be a deal soon on any "reunification" of the
  72. title. I don't see any reason why INTEL can't organise their
  73. own events if they ever have any future interest in chess.
  74.  
  75. The FIDE President has proposed a knockout World Championship
  76. to decide the World Champion. This event is to be held every
  77. year. The somehow believe that $5m can be raised each year
  78. as sponsorship, I would respectfully suggest that this is
  79. a joke. A return to the Zonal, Interzonal, Candidates Tournament
  80. and World Championship is I think a priority, I believe that
  81. this is a sustainable cycle over two years. But FIDE first 
  82. need to convince us that they are back on track, we will have
  83. to wait for the next meeting for that.

  100. Hoogovens A Tournament

  103. The A event started off in an extremely dull way. I feared that
  104. it was just going to be one of those GM tournaments where the
  105. event never quite takes off. However this seemed to start to
  106. change in round 3 with Anand, Ivanchuk and Piket winning. Rounds 5 
  107. and 6 contained some very bloodthirsty (although probably inaccurate
  108. chess.) Anand seems to be hitting top form, he played imaginatively
  109. against Sokolov but missed his winning chances and lost, but he
  110. won both in rounds 6 and in round 7 (still continuing as I write.)
  111.  
  112. Ivan Sokolov lost a very, very odd game against Vassily Ivanchuk
  113. in round 6.

  272. Jaan Narva has compiled the games from the Keres and corrects
  273. the scores which I reported last week (one too many points for
  274. each player)

  276. Mart Tarmak also says that there will be a Keres Memorial in Pdrnu 
  277. in February (Ehlvest, Oll, Short, I. Sokolov, Hracek, Khalifman - 
  278. XVII category).
  279.  
  280. He also talks about an event which is in the planning stages but
  281. looks certain to go ahead at the end of February or the beginning
  282. of March.

  284. "It is to show a little the "laboratory" of correspondence chess player 
  285. to the audience. GM Ehlvest
  286. agreed to play simultaneously against the best Estonian correspondence chess
  287. players who are allowed to use all that they normally do (books, second
  288. board for analyse, computer, other chess-players). Ehlvest has 2,5 hours for
  289. four games, the correspondence players for the whole game. Of course, both
  290. sides are reduced in thinking but anyway I think it will be very interesting
  291. match. Also it seems that it is the first such a kind event ever. (Of course
  292. grandmasters have played consultation games but it is different). Already
  293. agreed to play our correspondence chess world champion Iym, Tonu  and
  294. hopefully Jaan Merilo who has the highest ICCF rating (2600) among Estonian
  295. players will also join. The Board of Estonian Chess Federation (I am also
  296. member of this body) approved the idea and the main organizer will be
  297. Hendrik Olde (he made the book of all Paul Keres' games). We would like to
  298. inform the chess world beforehand because we hope that the event will have
  299. broader than only all-Estonian interest." [Mart Tarmak]

  412. Republic. Young Polish IM Marcin Kaminski scored 7.5 pts and together with the 
  413. rising star Sergei Movsesian (nowadays playing for Armenia, lives for two 
  414. years in the Czech Republic) achieved GM norms. 
  415. Vlastimil Babula, Czech player nr. 2, did not win the last round with Jan 
  416. Votava and could not score his last GM norm. Babula started 0/2 and in the 
  417. next rounds nobody could stop him.
